NOVA: Piracy
A report on modern piracy in Southeast Asia for NOVA. We spent several weeks in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. Among interviews and other scenes, we filmed with the Malaysian Coastguard while on patrol. We also managed to get an interview with two pirates who used to be part of a big gang attacking ships in the Straits of Malacca, sometimes even killing their victims. We are the first journalists to ever have interviewed pirates on camera.

Mags and Joost worked alone most of the time, doing all the filming while following photographers around with DV-camera and radio mics.
NOVA Kashmir
10-minute news-report on the effects of the ceasefire in Srinagar (India) for NOVA. Made of our own backs, on a limb, with a small DV-camera and a poor sound kit. Mags and Joost went into Kashmir without official back-up.
Joost: ‘Because of the unofficial character of our operation, we managed to get very close to the repressed people of Kashmir. We witnessed horrible situations. Our report focussed on the killing of an innocent rickshaw-driver by the Indian Army, which caused an outbreak of riots with the Army firing at civilians.’
